We have been delighted and overwehelmed by the quantity and quality of story and art entries we have received for our competition.
Time to share the first few themes – WITCHES AND GHOSTS.

The Bathgate Hills Venture, in partnership with the Reconnect Regal Theatre and The Year of Stories, is looking for YOUR stories of the Bathgate Hills, told in your own unique voice.
This will form an integral part of our Stories of the Bathgate Hills Day: a Celebration of the Voices of People and Place, which will take place on 9th October 2022.
Everyone has a story to tell – a memory, an imagined history or myth. It can be as fantastical or realistic as you want it to be. All stories in all forms are welcome!
Our storytelling competition is open to everyone with judging split into 4 age range categories.
Ages 8-9
Ages 10-12
Ages 13-15
Ages 16+
Stories can be created in a number of forms:
- Written (up to 500 words)
- Illustrated, with or without words – could be a drawing, painting or a photograph
- Recorded or sung orally (mp3 file)
- A short 1-2 minute video
ENTRIES CAN BE SUBMITTED AT ANY STAGE.
CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS FRIDAY 23 SEPTEMBER.
We suggest the following themes, which might help prompt a few ideas for your story:
- Cairnpapple, Standing Stones, Silver Mines and other historic parts of the Bathgate Hills: who might have built these monuments and why? What do you imagine were the stories of the people who lived long ago?
- Animals and Plants: share the story of your favourite animal or plant in the hills. What time of day or night or season or time in history do they appear? And what do they do? Remember Lizzie our famous fossil too – what was her life like?
- Witches and Ghosts: what spooky tales may be hiding in the hills?
- What famous people may have travelled through the Bathgate Hills? Kings, Queens, soldiers, explorers…
- Your Perfect Day in the Bathgate Hills: what did you see and do? What was the season?
- What myths and legends about the hills have you heard or do you imagine? Aliens, Silver running men, worshippers…
The top 4 winning entries (by age category) will be shared during our Storytelling evening at the Regal in Bathgate on 9th October. There will be prizes!
